Canada significantly undercounts maternal deaths, and doctors are sounding the alarm
We are thankful to see preeclampsia being highlighted in national press shinning a light on the severity of this pregnancy complication. Thank you CBC News, the courageous doctors who are sounding the alarms on maternal health and special thanks to the women & families featured in this article that shared their experiences.
This article focuses on the story of Claudia Wong who nearly lost her life due to eclampsia (the most severe form of preeclampsia) and Patti Faran, who lost her daughter due to HELLP Syndrome.
We have a special connection to the Farnan family as Kayla’s sister, Kristina Farnan, was a past Promise Walk Coordinator for the Niagara Region Promise Walk for Preeclampsia. Their family continues to advocate for change, using Kayla’s passing to create awareness and change for all mother’s.
Our hearts go out to both of these women and their families. We encourage everyone to share this article to further spread awareness of the severities of Preeclampsia, Eclampsia, and HELLP Syndrome so others may know how to recognize when they may be experiencing symptoms before, during or after pregnancy.
